Sandblasting and shotblasting are techniques used to clean and prepare surfaces by forcibly propelling abrasive material against them at high speed. They are used in a variety of industries, including:

  • Automotive: to remove rust, paint, and other contaminants from car parts before painting or coating
  • Aerospace: to clean and prepare aircraft surfaces for painting or coating
  • Construction: to clean and prepare concrete surfaces for painting, coating, or sealing
  • Marine: to clean and prepare boat hulls for painting or coating

The two techniques differ in the type of abrasive material used:

  • Sandblasting uses sand as the abrasive material. Sand is a relatively inexpensive material, but it can be aggressive and can damage delicate surfaces. It is also not environmentally friendly, as silica dust from sand can be harmful to human health.
  • Shotblasting uses a variety of materials as the abrasive material, such as steel shot, glass beads, and aluminum oxide. These materials are more expensive than sand, but they are less aggressive and can be used on more delicate surfaces. They are also more environmentally friendly.

Both sandblasting and shotblasting can be dangerous if not done properly. It is important to wear appropriate safety gear, such as a respirator, gloves, and eye protection, when using these techniques.
